Bonnie practices pediatric medicine at a community clinic in Vallejo, La Clinica de La Raza, serving patients who otherwise couldn't afford medical care. She also practiced with Kaiser Permanente in Solano County for 25 years. Throughout her career, Bonnie has been deeply engaged in advocating for tens of thousands of children, youth and families. Through her work in the community and in organized medicine, she is engaged in advocacy for local, state and federal policy, with particular focus on public health.
She has first-hand experience as a parent in advocating for appropriate educational services for her daughter, and in turn has been able to help multiple parents advocate effectively for their children. Her daughter attended public schools in Fairfield and struggled due to profound right-sided deafness. Her daughter's hearing disAbility wasn't discovered until kindergarten, and due to a miscommunication at the school level, she didn't start to receive services until the middle of first grade. By that time, she had fallen sorely behind.
Bonnie worked closely with teachers, school administration and with the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing services through the Solano County Office of Education. Her daughter received Special Ed services to make up for what she had missed in her early school years and to prevent her from falling further behind. Bonnie was fully engaged throughout her daughter's educational journey. She served on her daughter's school site council at B. Gale Wilson K-8 and on Armijo High School Site Council where she was Chair. With hard work, tenacity and some amazing teachers, her daughter graduated with honors from High School, went on to college and graduate school, and is now a biotech scientist living in San Diego.
In the community, Bonnie volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and worked closely with children and youth in the Clild Welfare System and with the Juvenile Court System. She also served on the Board of the Solano County Library Foundation supporting literacy programs in Solano County such as Reach Out and Read.
In organized medicine, Bonnie serves on the Napa-Solano Medical Society Board, is a delegate to the California Medical Association, is Chair of her District Delegation and a member of the CMA Council on Legislation. She also serves on the Board of SF Bay Physicians for Social Responsibility and on the Steering Committee of the Medical Society Consortium for Climate and Health representing the American Medical Women’s Association.
She trained as a Climate Reality Leader in 2017 with Nobel Laureate and former Vice-President Al Gore. The training made it undeniably clear that we need to change the trajectory we are on for ourselves and for future generations. She has spent countless hours educating folks about implementing solutions to the climate crisis. She leads a Solano Climate Policy Action Team and serves on the Climate Reality Bay Area Chapter Leadership Team as Policy Action Co-Chair and was Chapter Co-Chair in 2022.
